Class of 1954

Barbara Presley. Barbara died on October 9, 1999.

Her obituary: Barbara Gail Wallace, 64, hairdresser, Bible study teacher Barbara Gail Wallace, 64, of Marietta, a hairdresser for 48 years, never met a stranger and took on everybody's problems and helped solve them. Mrs. Wallace died at home Saturday of diabetes, after two weeks at Kennestone Hospital. The funeral is 2 p.m. today at Olive Springs Baptist Church. Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Wallace, a Fulton County native, lived in Cobb County most of her life. She was a graduate of the Cosmetology School of Atlanta and went to work after high school for Rosemary's Beauty Salon, which was then located on the Marietta Square. Fifteen years ago, she began working for herself, first leasing a booth at another shop and then working at home, until she retired nearly three years ago. Her specialty was hair coloring, said her daughter, Lynn Moore, of Woodstock. "Most of her working life she worked at least 12 hours a day. She even went to people's homes, nursing homes and funeral homes," her son, Eddie Wallace, of Marietta, said. "After she retired she'd fix hair for some of her old patrons and, if they tried to pay her, she'd ask them to make a donation to her church," Mrs. Moore said. She called her mother a woman with good common sense and "incredible" people sense. Mrs. Wallace was a Bible study teacher at Olive Springs Baptist Church for three decades. "She always had a smile and her church was her life," said Dot Galloway of West Cobb, a close friend for 30 years. "She was outgoing and a great leader and her Sunday school class grew to be like a family. She'll be greatly missed," Mrs. Galloway said. She always looked forward to Mondays, when she had the day off and could cook supper for the whole family, her children said. Those family dinners were "very important to her," her son said. "She'd ask what everybody wanted and fix it for them," he said. She'd make Southern fried chicken for his sister and red salmon patties for him, he said. "She lived for the Lord Jesus Christ," Mr. Wallace said. "She was the most giving woman. She always put others in front of herself. She was a perfect grandmother. She loved those babies and her family. If she had any troubles, she kept them to herself, so as not to worry the family." Survivors other than her son and daughter include her husband, Herbert E. Wallace of Marietta; a sister, Brenda Dupree of Columbus, Tenn.; two brothers, Arthur Presley Jr. of North Carolina and James Presley of Marshall, Va.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
