His obituary: Captain David N Pettitt, 72 – Retired Captain David N. Pettitt, 72, of the Marietta Police Department, passed away Saturday afternoon, April 21, 2012. David suffered from complications of heart failure and passed peacefully at home. He was born on December 22, 1939 in Blairsville, GA and grew up in Marietta, GA. He attended Sprayberry High School in Marietta and then joined the U.S. Navy, where he was honorable discharged in February 1963. David worked at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation for 10 years before joining the Marietta Police Department in 1973. David graduated from Kennesaw College in 1979 with an Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice & Law Enforcement. David was selected and completed the "Administrative Officers Course" in the fall of 1984 through the Southern Police Institute, of the University of Louisville, KY. He was a member of the Georgia Grand Masonic Lodge, The Peace Officers Association, and Ducks Unlimited. He is preceded in death by his Parents, Rev. Claude & Beulah Mae Pettitt, and Sister, Claudette Brown Sparks. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sandra Simmons Pettitt, Daughters, Patti (Kirk) Johnson and Michelle (David) Tanner, Sister, Carolyn Shaw, and Grandchildren, Tyler & Chad Johnson, and Claire Tanner. A Memorial Service celebrating his life, officiated by Rev. Steve Wiggington, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at South Care Cremation and Memorial Center, 595 Franklin Road, Marietta, GA 30067, 770-420-5557.
