She is predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Bobbie Earl Hughes and her parents Ivan Grady McWhorter and Hazel Agnes Worley McWhorter. Born on September 3, 1942, in Jasper, Georgia, Martha spent most of her life in Marietta, where she dedicated herself to a long and impactful career in nursing. A lifelong nurse with specialties in education, critical care, orthopedics, and leadership, she was known not only for her clinical skill, but for the compassion, wisdom, and mentorship she offered to colleagues and patients alike. Martha was a woman of deep faith and a devoted member at Shady Grove Baptist Church and Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. She served in many ministries, sang joyfully in the choir, and even took part in mission work abroad, including a meaningful trip to Russia. She found joy in travel, the quiet beauty of her garden, and in creating – especially her famously delicious fig preserves, which brought happiness to everyone lucky enough to receive a jar. A lifelong learner, Martha completed her RN education at the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing. She later earned a B.S. in Secondary Education from the University of Georgia and an EMBA from Kennesaw State University. A true testament to her curious mind and drive to grow in her profession. Martha’s life was a gift to all who knew her. She will be remembered for her grace, her laughter, her faith, and the quiet strength with which she served others. A funeral service in her honor will be held at Mayes Ward Dobbins Historic Marietta Chapel on Friday, April 11, 2025, at 2:00 PM.
