His obituary: James Rodney Connell, November 8, 1947 – May 4, 2007. James Rodney Connell, born November 8, 1947, was killed in a plane crash on Friday, May 4, 2007 near Asheville, N.C. Mr. Connell was a resident of Dublin, Ga. Mr. Connell, a veteran of the United States Air Force, had moved to Treutlen County in recent years, was a retired deputy marshal for the Fulton County Court System. He was also assigned to the Fulton County Training Center as an instructor who rose to the rank of Major. Connell was responsible for working on the national accreditation for the Fulton County Marshal's Department, which became the first Marshal's Department in the country to become nationally accredited as a law enforcement agency. Before that he was a police officer in Cobb County and he served as an instructor for the North Georgia Training Academy. Former Treutlen County Sheriff Wayne Hooks said Connell was a firearms instructor who trained his deputies for him and that Connell had been in law enforcement for a long time. I've known him since 1984. When he retired he wanted to get out of Fulton County so he moved down here (Dublin). He was a very personable kind of guy and could meet and talk to anybody, said Hooks. In addition he was a clown with the Shriners who performed every year at the Shriners' Circus and he was a Mason, according to the Honorable Kimberly Warden, Fulton County Magistrate Judge. Vernell Scott, administrative director for the Fulton County Magistrate, said Connell was originally from Cobb County. He is survived by his mother, Sarah Connell of Martinez, Ga.; one daughter, Korie and Joerg Schmidt, one son, Kevin Price, and two granddaughters, Emma and Isabelle, all of Canton, Ga.; three brothers, Steve and Connie Connell of Ranger, Ga., David and Edwena Connell of Dallas, Ga., and Glenn Connell of Kingston, Ga.; three aunts, Mae Martin of High Point, N.C., Betty and Harvey Dixon of Kingsland, Ga., and Myra Poole of Augusta; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
