His obituary: Memphis, TN – James E. Brown, Jr. passed away in his sleep on Thursday, August 9, 2018, after a lengthy fight with multiple health issues. Jim was born in Salem, Oregon to James E. Brown, Sr. and Bonnie Brown, both deceased, and at 68 years old, Jim was 2 days shy of his 69th birthday. Jim was pre-deceased by his first wife, Judy Gayle Crump. Jim was a devoted father, grandfather, uncle, husband, and friend. He leaves his spouse, Judy Griffin; children, Jennifer and Jason (Kris); stepsons, Jason and Kenny; grandchildren, Cody Mathew, Krista Marie, Lilyan Nichole, Carson Armstrong, Trinity Hope and Alyssa Payton; a sister, Judy Rogers, nieces and nephews in Atlanta, and a host of other relatives. As a family man, Jim was a CubMaster for Jason, and frequently took the family camping and spelunking. In later years, he and Jennifer would often speculate on their unrealized chances of competing in the "Amazing Race" on tv. During his military career, Jim was a Vietnam War veteran, having retired from the U.S. Navy after 26 years. He served in the Far East, Pacific Ocean, and several bases in the United States before settling in Memphis. He thereafter worked for and later retired from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, where he was the Information Systems projects manager. Jim was an avid history buff and particularly enjoyed the period of the Romans, Crusades, Versailles and the French Revolution -- and of course, naval sailing vessels. He was especially interested in the War Between the States and quite proud of his Confederate ancestors. Jim was a Life Member of the N. B. Forrest Camp 215 Sons of Confederate Veterans. Jim and Judy had earlier been active church members at Asbury United Methodist Church. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, August 17 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Avenue in Memphis. The funeral will be held on Saturday, August 18, at 10 a.m. at Memorial Park. The burial will immediately follow.
