His obituary: David Richmond Metcalf, March 27, 1976 – January 2, 2019. U.S. Navy Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG) David R. Metcalf passed away on January 2, 2019. Born on March 27, 1976, he was 42 years old. Dave is survived by his wife, Jamie Manuel Metcalf, his son, Franklin, his parents, Thomas and LaGenia Metcalf, and his brother, Mitchell Metcalf, as well as countless friends and teammates. A decorated combat veteran with three tours in the Pacific region and Iraq and one final tour in Afghanistan, Dave's military awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with Gold Star and Combat C designation), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with Silver Star and Combat V), Combat Action Ribbon (with Gold Star), Iraq Campaign, Afghanistan Campaign ribbons, as well as multiple unit and service awards. While growing up in Marietta, GA, Dave was an avid sports enthusiast excelling in swimming, wrestling, and martial arts in which all made him an ideal candidate for military service. Dave joined the Navy in 2000 to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a Navy SEAL. He quickly rose to the occasion and joined the elite ranks of the Navy SEALs in 2002. He received the esteemed designation of Honor Man in his BUD/S class, 236. Dave's passion for learning made him a natural educator. Following his many combat tours with Teams, he was chosen as a SEAL Combatives Instructor in which he taught fellow SEALs hand to hand combat techniques. In 2014, he realized he wanted to do more to help his fellow man. Dave applied and was accepted into the highly selective Interservice Physician Assistant Program. During the IPA Program, Dave tirelessly studied medically related areas of science for the eventual purpose of saving lives. In 2016, Dave received a Bachelor of Science degree and Masters of Physician Assistant Studies from University of Nebraska Medical Center. Following graduation, Dave was commissioned as a naval officer and was assigned as a Physician's Assistant to the 8th Marine Regiment at Camp Lejeune, NC. Dave met the love of his life, Jamie Manuel Metcalf in 2011. They married in April 2012 and welcomed their son Franklin Frankie Thomas Metcalf in October 2016. Although Dave excelled at anything he tried, his greatest achievement and source of immense pride was being a devoted father and loving husband. Dave's passion for learning made him a natural educator. Dave will be remembered for his selfless service to his family, his teammates, the Navy and the Nation. Dave walked with steadfast devotion in the path of Christ every day through his words and deeds. Dave left us far too soon, but he will not be forgotten, remaining forever in our hearts. His legacy lives on in his son, and those family, friends and teammates who had the immense honor of knowing and loving him. He epitomized what it means to be a man of honor, and his principled life will be remembered as this: U.S. Navy Lieutenant Junior Grade David R. Metcalf overcame much, accomplished even more, sacrificed for all, and loved unconditionally. He truly lived. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, 11:00 a.m., at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 36 N. Ellsworth Street, Naperville, Illinois 60540.
